Spring Cleaning for Green Roofs

Pro tips to reawaken plants

When you start to hear the birds chirping again it’s a clear sign that Spring has arrived. It’s also a signal that your green roof is coming out of its winter hibernation and will require a return to maintenance. What it will need varies from site to site and the system installed, but there are a few constants on the checklist. Generally, for seasonal safety reasons, crews have not been on the roof for at least five months, so our first step is a site assessment.

Green roof maintenance checklist

1. Inspecting for winter damage: elements such as snow, ice, rain and wind can erode soil, kill plants and clog drains
2. Clearing drainage systems: cleaning out gutters and drains ensures that water flows
3. Weed control: removing weeds and invasive species before they seed themselves and takeover
4. Checking for soil and substrate health: aerate lightly and replenish soil that has eroded. Winter precipitation may have over saturated the plants choking the air pockets, suffocating the roots and killing the vegetation
5. Fertilizing: boost plant nutrients as required
6. Replenish: fill in bare patches with Zone appropriate plants
7. Irrigation: it can be integrated or temporary – both need to be started up to make sure they are in good working order

The importance of hiring a professional maintenance crew

Preparedness is the foundation of success. Professionals have specialized training, know what to look for and bring a deep understanding of the consequences of neglect. When we design and install green roofs we empower clients with well-informed choices that in the long run save time, money and resources. Long before maintenance ever comes into play, it all begins with meticulous project planning.

Off the top, we consider site safety as it is especially key when working on elevated spaces. Our teams have Working with Heights certification, without it they don’t get on the roof. This equips them with the skills to identify hazards, teaches them how to properly use protective personal equipment and follow best practices to minimize risks. It also ensures legal compliance with industry regulations.

Planting with purpose

Palette selections are important especially in provinces and states that have seasons This goes beyond aesthetics. In the Northern hemisphere sedums are a favourite choice for green roofs. Though conditions vary from region to region, sedums store water in their leaves making them drought-tolerant and resilient to harsh conditions. Their shallow root systems don’t require deep soil providing a lightweight solution that won’t add a significant load to the roof structure.

Know before you grow

We consider plant zones. These are geographic areas defined by climate conditions and used to determine which plants are compatible in a specific region, taking into consideration seasonal shifts. It’s a hardiness marker; in Canada there are eight Plant Zones and sub-zones which play a vital role in our recommendations. To mitigate vegetation loss, we choose plants that won’t struggle in their environments, preserving biodiversity, local ecosystems and maximizing maintenance efficiencies.

We offer turn-key solutions. Even if we didn’t install it, we can maintain it. Every recommendation we make is rooted in expertise and an assurance that the green roof performs and lasts for years to come.
